Schloss Ort, Salzburg, Austria, Europe
Schloss Ort (often spelled Schloss Orth) is a historic castle complex located in Gmunden, Upper Austria, approximately 75 km (46 miles) east of Salzburg. While frequently visited as a day trip from Salzburg, it is not located within the city of Salzburg itself.
Visual Characteristics
The complex is famous for being a "double castle" consisting of two distinct parts:
Seeschloss (Sea Castle): A picturesque white castle with a high tower, situated on a small island in Lake Traunsee. It is accessed via a 123-meter wooden bridge.
Landschloss (Land Castle): A square-shaped building on the mainland, connected to the island by the bridge and an avenue. It features four corner towers with onion domes.
The architecture is a mix of medieval foundations, Gothic elements, and a Renaissance-style courtyard with two-story arcades.
Location & Access Logistics
The castle is located at Ort 1, 4810 Gmunden.
From Salzburg: Approximately a 1-hour drive via the A1 motorway (exit Gmunden).
Rail: Regional trains run from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Gmunden (usually requiring one transfer at Attnang-Puchheim). From Gmunden station, it is a 30-minute walk or a short bus ride to the castle.
Parking: Available at the Toscanapark parking lot, a short walk through a scenic park to the castle entrance.
Historical Origin
The castle was founded around 1080 by Hartnidus of Ort. It was a key site for the medieval salt trade. In the 19th century, it was acquired by Archduke Johann Salvator of Austria, a member of the Habsburg-Tuscany line who famously renounced his titles, changed his name to Johann Orth, and disappeared at sea near Cape Horn in 1890. Since 1995, the Seeschloss has been owned by the city of Gmunden.
Key Highlights & Activities
Wooden Bridge: A landmark in its own right, offering views of the Traunstein mountain (the "Guardian of the Salzkammergut").
