Tikehau Atoll, Rangiroa, French Polynesia, Australia
Tikehau Atoll is a coral atoll located in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Tahiti.
Visual Characteristics
The atoll consists of a ring of coral islets (motus) encircling a lagoon. The motus are characterized by white coral sand beaches and dense palm vegetation. The lagoon water exhibits varying shades of blue and turquoise, with depths ranging from shallow sandbars to deeper channels. The average elevation of the motus is less than 5 meters above sea level.
Location & Access Logistics
Tikehau is accessible via Tikehau Airport (TIH), which receives flights from Tahiti (PPT) and Rangiroa (RGI). The airport is located on Tuamotu Island, one of the motus. From the airport, transport to accommodations is typically arranged by hotels via boat transfer. There are no public roads connecting the motus. Rangiroa, the nearest major atoll, is approximately 30 minutes by small aircraft.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Tikehau is a classic example of an atoll, formed by the gradual subsidence of a volcanic island, with coral reefs growing upwards around it. The atoll is part of the larger Tuamotu Archipelago, which formed millions of years ago. Its ecological significance lies in its status as a protected marine reserve, established to preserve its rich biodiversity.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include snorkeling and diving in the lagoon and passes, observing marine life such as manta rays and sharks. Birdwatching is a primary activity on the motus, particularly the northern islets which host large colonies of seabirds. Fishing excursions are also available. The main pass, Tuamotu Pass, is known for its strong currents, attracting pelagic species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Accommodations on Tikehau consist of a limited number of pensions and resorts, primarily located on the motus. Restrooms and basic amenities are available at these establishments. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available within resort areas, but can be intermittent. There are no public food vendors outside of the resorts and pensions.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from May to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with lower humidity and less rainfall. The best time of day for underwater photography is generally between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight penetration is optimal. Tidal conditions are important for navigating the passes; check local tide charts.
Facts & Legends
Tikehau is renowned for its exceptionally high density of fish, earning it the nickname "Pink Sand Island" due to the crushed coral that gives some of its beaches a pinkish hue. A specific tip for visitors is to arrange boat transfers in advance, as services are limited and often tied to flight schedules.
