Arena Kombëtare Stadium, Tirana, Albania, Europe
Arena Kombëtare, commercially known as the Air Albania Stadium, is an all-seater football stadium located on the site of the former Qemal Stafa Stadium in central Tirana. It serves as the primary home ground for the Albanian national football team and is a multi-functional sports and commercial complex.
Visual Characteristics
The stadium features an octagonal, multi-faceted exterior covered in over 3,200 red and black metal panels and glass, reflecting the colors of the Albanian national flag. The most prominent feature is the Marriott Tirana tower located in the northwest corner, which stands 112 meters tall with 24 floors. The structure incorporates the original 1930s monumental stone facade of the Qemal Stafa Stadium, preserved and integrated into the modern glass-and-steel design.
Location & Access Logistics
The stadium is situated at Sheshi Italia 1, approximately 1.5km south of Skanderbeg Square. It is accessible by car via the Mother Teresa Square and Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit. Public transport options include several municipal bus lines that stop at Mother Teresa Square, such as the Unaza or Tirana e Re lines. The complex includes an underground parking garage with 256 spaces, though access is restricted during international match days.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti of Archea Associati, construction began in 2016 and was completed in 2019. The project involved the total demolition of the 1946 Qemal Stafa Stadium, which had been built during the Italian occupation. The new arena was inaugurated on November 17, 2019, for a match between Albania and France and met UEFA Category 4 standards.
Key Highlights & Activities
The stadium hosts international football matches, including the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League Final. Inside the complex, visitors can access the Museum of Albanian Football, which documents the history of the sport in the country. The Arena Center portion provides shopping, dining, and fitness facilities. Guided tours are available, providing access to the VIP sky boxes and players' tunnels.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes 22,500 ergonomic seats, multiple VIP lounges, and media tribunes. Public restrooms and concession stands are distributed throughout the four stands. The building is equipped with high-speed 4G/5G cell signal coverage. Underground, the Arena Center features a supermarket, several cafes (such as Sophie Café), and international restaurants.
Best Time to Visit
For stadium tours, late morning on weekdays (10:00–12:00) provides the best lighting for viewing the interior pitch. For architectural photography, the "golden hour" shortly before sunset highlights the red metallic texture of the facade. The tower and stadium exterior are fully illuminated with LED lighting systems after dark, making the evening a preferred time for exterior photos.
Facts & Legends
The stadium's tower is currently the tallest building in Albania. A specific design requirement for the project was the "surgical" removal and reconstruction of the original 1930s stone facade designed by Gherardo Bosio; each stone was numbered, stored, and reassembled to satisfy heritage preservation requirements while allowing for a completely modern interior.
