Pobiti Kamani, Varna, Bulgaria, Europe
Pobiti Kamani, known as the "Stone Forest," is a natural rock phenomenon located 18 km west of Varna. It is one of the few desert-like environments in Europe and has been a protected site since 1938.
Visual Characteristics
The site consists of groups of upright stone columns, some reaching heights of 7 meters and diameters of 3 meters. Most columns are hollow and filled with sand. The landscape is arid and sandy, scattered with limestone pillars that resemble a petrified forest.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the old Varna–Sofia road (Route 2), near the villages of Slanchevo and Banovo. The drive from Varna takes approximately 20 minutes. There is no direct public transport to the main site; arrival by private vehicle, taxi, or organized tour is necessary. A small visitor center and a parking area are located at the entrance of the primary group (The Center-South group).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The formations date back to the Eocene epoch (approximately 50 million years ago). Scientific theories suggest they were formed as a result of natural gas seepage from the seabed or as coral reefs in an ancient sea. Ecologically, the area supports rare desert vegetation and specialized fauna, including various reptiles and insects.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Central Group: The most impressive collection of pillars, featuring a designated walking path through the tallest formations.
The "Wishing Stone": A specific formation where visitors traditionally leave small stones or make wishes.
Nature Photography: The open landscape and unique shadows created by the pillars provide optimal conditions for photography.
Hiking: Several smaller, less-visited groups of stones are accessible via unpaved paths in the surrounding area.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site features a small ticket booth and information center. Basic informational signs are provided in multiple languages. There are no significant indoor facilities or cafes; visitors should bring water and sun protection. 5G/4G cellular coverage is stable.
Best Time to Visit
The site is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 to 19:30 during the summer season (May–September); it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Late afternoon is the optimal time for visiting to avoid peak heat and capture the long shadows of the columns.
Facts & Legends
Various legends attribute the stones to giants or petrified people. A logistical detail: the sand can become extremely hot in summer, and sturdy footwear is required to navigate the uneven, sandy terrain.
