The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral (Varna Cathedral) is the largest Orthodox temple in Varna and a primary symbol of the city.
Visual Characteristics
The cathedral is characterized by its Byzantine-revival architecture, featuring massive stone walls and six gilded domes. The interior contains intricate wood-carved iconostases and throne, along with expansive murals and stained-glass windows depicting Saints Cyril and Methodius. A 38-meter belfry was added later, offering a dominant vertical element to the city skyline.

The foundation stone was laid in 1880 by Prince Alexander I Battenberg. Construction was completed in 1886, primarily using materials from the dismantled defensive walls of the city. The gold plating of the domes was a major renovation project completed in the early 2000s and refreshed in 2022.
