Varna Roman Baths, Varna, Bulgaria, Europe
The Roman Thermae of Varna (Odessos) is a major archaeological site located at the corner of San Stefano and Han Krum streets in the southeastern part of Varna, Bulgaria. Built in the late 2nd century AD, it is the largest Roman bath complex in the Balkans and the fourth largest in Europe.
Visual Characteristics
The complex covers over 7,000 square meters. The remaining walls stand up to 18 meters high, constructed from alternating layers of stone and red bricks (opus mixtum). The site features the typical Roman bath layout, including the frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room), and caldarium (hot room), along with vast service corridors and a complex heating system (hypocaust).
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated in the Greek Quarter of Varna, approximately 500 meters from the Port of Varna and 400 meters from the Sea Garden. It is easily accessible on foot from the central pedestrian zone. Bus lines 20, 39, and 17A stop nearby at the "Baseyna" or "Festivalen kompleks" stops. Street parking is limited and falls within the "Blue Zone" paid parking system.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The baths were part of the Roman city of Odessos and were in use until the end of the 3rd century AD. They served not only for hygiene but as a central hub for the city's social and political life. The structure fell into ruin following the decline of the Roman Empire and was rediscovered in the early 20th century, with systematic excavations led by the Skorpil brothers.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk through the massive vaulted halls and examine the remains of the hypocaust system, which utilized underground furnaces to circulate hot air beneath the floors and through the walls. The "Small Roman Baths," a separate, smaller complex from the 3rd-4th century, is located nearby on Primorski Blvd. During the summer, the site occasionally hosts theatrical performances and concerts in the main courtyard.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site includes a ticket office, a small gift shop, and informative signage in Bulgarian and English. Basic restrooms are available. The terrain is uneven with many stone steps and dirt paths, making it difficult for strollers or wheelchairs. 5G cellular coverage is stable.
Best Time to Visit
The site is open Tuesday through Sunday, typically from 10:00 to 18:00 (summer) and 10:00 to 17:00 (winter). Early morning or late afternoon is best for photography to capture the dramatic shadows cast by the high brick walls. It is closed on Mondays during the winter season.
Facts & Legends
The baths were so large that they required a massive amount of wood to keep the fires burning; historians estimate that several tons of wood were consumed daily to maintain the water temperatures. A logistical detail: the ticket for the Large Roman Baths is separate from the Small Roman Baths, though a combined ticket for the Varna Archaeological Museum often includes entry to these sites.
