Dechen Phodrang is a Buddhist monastery and monastic school located in Thimphu, Bhutan.

It is situated on a hill overlooking the Thimphu Valley.

The main temple building features a multi-story structure with traditional Bhutanese architectural elements, including tiered roofs and decorative carvings. The exterior walls are painted in muted earth tones, with accents of red and gold on window frames and eaves. The complex includes several courtyards and smaller monastic buildings.

Dechen Phodrang is located approximately 2 kilometers north of central Thimphu. Access is via the road leading north from the city center, which becomes a paved uphill road. Parking is available at the monastery grounds. Public transport options are limited; a taxi or private vehicle is the most direct method of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Dechen Phodrang was established in 1971 as a monastic school. It was built on the site of an older monastery that was destroyed by an earthquake. The original monastery is believed to date back to the 12th century, founded by Lama Gyalwang Drukpa Kunley. The current institution serves as a primary monastic training center for young monks.
