Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple located in the city center of Thimphu, Bhutan.
This structure represents the celestial abode of Guru Rinpoche.
Visual Characteristics
The temple is a multi-story structure constructed with reinforced concrete and finished with traditional Bhutanese architectural elements. Its exterior is painted in a combination of white and ochre, adorned with intricate wood carvings and decorative motifs. The roof features gilded finials and prayer flags. The building stands approximately 20 meters in height.

Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is situated in the heart of Thimphu, adjacent to the main road, Norzin Lam. It is approximately 1 kilometer from the main bus station. Ample public parking is available in designated lots along Norzin Lam. Local taxis are readily available to reach the temple.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Zangto Pelri Lhakhang was completed in 1971. It was commissioned by the Queen Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden. The temple's design is intended to replicate the mythical Copper-Colored Mountain, the paradise of Guru Rinpoche.

Visitors can circumambulate the temple clockwise, observing the various statues and murals depicting Buddhist deities and scenes. The ground floor houses a large statue of Guru Rinpoche. Ascending to the upper floors provides views of the surrounding city. Photography is permitted outside the main prayer halls.

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, the late afternoon (between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM) is recommended, as the sun illuminates the temple's facade. The weather in Thimphu is generally pleasant year-round, though the monsoon season (June to August) can bring rain. The dry seasons (March to May and September to November) offer the most stable weather.

A unique aspect of Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is its representation of the Buddhist cosmology. Each of the four floors is said to correspond to a different realm or aspect of the Guru Rinpoche's paradise, with the top floor representing the highest spiritual plane.
