Đurđevića Tara Bridge, Pljevlja, Montenegro, Europe
The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is a reinforced concrete arch bridge spanning the Tara River. It is located at the crossroads between the municipalities of Pljevlja, Žabljak, and Mojkovac, serving as a critical architectural landmark and transit point within the Durmitor National Park buffer zone.
Visual Characteristics
The bridge is 365 meters long and features five arches. The largest arch has a span of 116 meters. The roadway sits 172 meters above the Tara River. It is constructed from reinforced concrete, which at the time of its completion was left in its natural grey state to contrast with the green limestone canyon walls. The structure is integrated into the steep cliffs on both sides of the canyon.
Location & Access Logistics
The bridge is situated at the junction of the roads connecting Mojkovac, Žabljak, and Pljevlja.
From Pljevlja: 40 km (approx. 45 minutes) via the R-10 regional road.
From Žabljak: 23 km (approx. 25 minutes) via the P-5.
Pedestrian Access: Two-way pedestrian sidewalks run the length of the bridge.
Parking: Dedicated asphalt parking lots are available on the Žabljak and Pljevlja sides of the bridge.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Designed by Mijat Trojanović and supervised by Isaac Russo, construction took place between 1937 and 1940. At completion, it was the largest vehicular concrete arch bridge in Europe. In 1942, during WWII, Yugoslav Partisans blew up the smallest arch to prevent the advance of Italian forces. The bridge was restored in 1946. It spans the Tara River, a UNESCO-protected Biosphere Reserve.

Facts & Legends
The most prominent historical fact involves the engineer Lazar Jauković, who helped build the bridge and then placed the explosives to destroy the specific arch during WWII to ensure it could be easily repaired later; he was eventually captured and executed on the bridge by occupying forces. A monument to Jauković stands at the bridge's entrance.
