Goransko Lake, Pljevlja, Montenegro, Europe
Goransko Lake is a small artificial reservoir located within the park-forest area of Brdo Gorice on the southern outskirts of Pljevlja, Montenegro. It serves as a local recreational zone and a water storage facility for nearby industrial and agricultural needs.
Visual Characteristics
The lake features a circular shape with calm, dark green water surrounded by a dense forest of pine and spruce trees. The shoreline is stabilized with stone and concrete embankments in some sections, while others remain natural with grassy slopes. A perimeter walking path circles the water, and the surrounding terrain is characterized by a high density of coniferous vegetation and moss-covered forest floor.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located approximately 1.5km south of the Pljevlja town center on the slopes of Brdo Gorice. It is accessible by car via a paved local road branching from Ulica Oslobođenja. There is a designated gravel parking area at the lake entrance. Pedestrians can reach the lake from the town center in 20 minutes using the forest trails and stairways starting near the Monument to the Fallen Soldiers.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake was created in the mid-20th century through the damming of a local spring and the accumulation of runoff water. It was developed as part of a wider afforestation and park-building project led by the "Gorani" (Young Nature Guardians) movement, from which the lake derives its name. The surrounding forest was manually planted to prevent erosion on the hillsides overlooking the town.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking and jogging are the primary activities on the 1km perimeter trail. The lake is used for recreational fishing, primarily for carp and smaller whitefish. During the summer, the surrounding forest clearings are used for picnicking and outdoor fitness. Observation of local bird species and squirrels is common due to the protected status of the forest.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The area includes basic wooden benches and waste bins along the path. There are no public restrooms or indoor facilities at the lake. Natural shade is nearly continuous due to the tree canopy. 5G cell signal is strong. The nearest food and beverage services are located 1km away in the town center, though a seasonal cafe occasionally operates near the entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is early morning when the water surface is still, creating a mirror reflection of the pine trees. June through September offers the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities. In winter, the lake often freezes over, and the surrounding trails are used for sledding.
Facts & Legends
A local historical oddity is that the forest surrounding the lake was planted entirely by volunteers and schoolchildren during the socialist era to transform the once-bare limestone hill into a green "lung" for the industrial town. A "secret" tip for visitors is to follow the uphill trail on the south side of the lake to reach a hidden clearing that offers a direct view of the Pljevlja Power Station chimneys.
