Tara Canyon, Pljevlja, Montenegro, Europe

The Tara River Canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world, following the Grand Canyon. While the canyon spans several municipalities, the section near Pljevlja is defined by the iconic Durdevića Tara Bridge, representing the northern gateway to the Durmitor National Park.

Visual Characteristics

The canyon reaches a maximum depth of approximately 1,300 meters. It is characterized by nearly vertical limestone cliffs, dense coniferous and deciduous forests, and the "Tear of Europe"-the Tara River, known for its high-clarity turquoise water. The landscape features over 40 large waterfalls and numerous karst springs that emerge directly from the canyon walls.

Location & Access Logistics

The primary access point from Pljevlja is the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, located 40 kilometers southwest of the city center.

Transit: Accessible via the R-10 regional road. The drive from Pljevlja takes approximately 45–60 minutes.

Pedestrian: Visitors can walk the entire 365-meter length of the bridge on dedicated pedestrian walkways.

Parking: Large parking lots are available at both ends of the bridge, accommodating cars and tour buses.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The canyon was formed through long-term fluvial erosion of the limestone plateau. The Tara River is part of the Danube basin and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Biosphere Reserve. The bridge itself was completed in 1940 and was the largest concrete arch bridge in Europe at the time of its construction. During WWII, a portion of the bridge was intentionally destroyed by Yugoslav Partisans to halt the Italian advance, then reconstructed in 1946.

Key Highlights & Activities

Rafting: The river offers world-class whitewater rafting (Class III-IV). Most tours start at the "Splavište" entry point near the bridge.

Zip-lining: Several of the longest zip-lines in Europe cross the canyon adjacent to the bridge, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h.

Photography: The central arch of the bridge provides a 360-degree view of the canyon's depth and the river’s curve.

Hiking: Marked trails descend from the bridge plateau toward the riverbed and nearby monasteries.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The area around the bridge is highly developed for tourism.

Facilities: Multiple restaurants, souvenir shops, and adventure tour offices are concentrated at the bridgeheads.

Connectivity: 4G and 5G signals are generally stable near the bridge but drop significantly once descending into the canyon.

Accommodations: Several eco-camps and small motels are located within a 5km radius.

Best Time to Visit

Rafting: May and June offer the highest water levels and most challenging rapids. July and August are better for recreational, family-oriented rafting.

Sightseeing: Late September and October provide high-fidelity visuals due to the autumn foliage contrasting with the turquoise water.

Timing: Midday provides the best lighting for the canyon floor; early morning often sees the canyon filled with thick mist.

Facts & Legends

A historical fact is that the lead engineer of the bridge's construction, Isaac Russo, had to help destroy his own creation during WWII to prevent enemy passage. A technical marvel of the canyon is its "inverted" climate; the bottom of the canyon often hosts Mediterranean plant species that cannot survive on the frigid Alpine plateau above.
