The Martyrs' Cemetery is the largest national burial ground in Albania, situated on a hill overlooking the capital. It serves as the final resting place for approximately 900 partisans who died during World War II and features the monumental Mother Albania statue.

The cemetery is designed in a monumental Neoclassical and Socialist Realist style, consisting of tiered white stone terraces. The central focal point is the 12-meter-tall Mother Albania statue, constructed of concrete and white stone, depicting a woman holding a laurel wreath and a sword. The graves are marked by uniform white marble slabs arranged in symmetrical rows across the sloped terrain.

The site is located on Rruga e Elbasanit in the southern outskirts of Tirana, approximately 3.5km from the city center. It is accessible via the "Qyteti Studenti" or "Sauku" bus lines departing from the city center. For motorists, there is a dedicated parking area at the base of the hill, with a wide stone staircase and a paved ramp leading to the monument platform.

The cemetery was inaugurated in 1971 during the communist period to centralize the remains of war dead and create a site for state ceremonies. The Mother Albania statue was designed by sculptors Kristaq Rama, Muntaz Dhrami, and Shaban Hadëri. The cemetery is situated on a Mediterranean hillside characterized by cypress trees and manicured grass lawns.

The facility includes a guard post at the entrance and public restrooms near the parking area. Best Time to Visit

The cemetery is open during daylight hours, typically 08:00 to 20:00. The best time for photography is at sunset, as the Mother Albania statue faces west toward the city, capturing the evening light. Clear mornings offer the best visibility of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Facts & Legends

Enver Hoxha, the former communist leader of Albania, was originally buried here in a prominent position in 1985; however, his remains were exhumed in 1992 following the fall of communism and moved to a public cemetery in Sharra. The site remains the highest topographical point in the immediate city vicinity used for public monuments.
