Visual Characteristics

The cave system is composed of limestone formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. The cave interiors are dark, with some areas featuring calcite flows and flowstones. The surrounding landscape is arid, characterized by sparse vegetation and rocky outcrops.

Location & Access Logistics

Gcwihaba Caves are situated approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Maun. Access is via a gravel road (D300) that requires a 4x4 vehicle. The final approach involves a 2-kilometer walk from the parking area to the cave entrance. No public transport services reach the caves directly.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The caves are formed by the dissolution of limestone over geological time. They are classified as a karst landscape. Archaeological evidence suggests human use of the caves dating back thousands of years, with findings of stone tools and pottery.

Key Highlights & Activities

Exploration of the cave chambers, including the main cave and the smaller "Bat Cave." Observation of cave formations. Guided tours are available, led by local guides who provide information on the geology and history of the site.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic facilities are present at the parking area, including pit toilets. There are no food vendors or shops at the cave site. Cell phone signal is generally absent within the cave system and unreliable in the surrounding remote area.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, from May to October, is recommended for easier access due to road conditions. The best time of day for visiting is during daylight hours for navigation. The caves maintain a consistent temperature year-round.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests the caves were once inhabited by a large snake. A specific tip for visitors is to bring a reliable light source in addition to any provided by guides, as some passages can be very dark.
