Moremi Gorge, Maun, Botswana, Africa
Moremi Gorge is a geological formation located in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, near the town of Maun.
This natural site features a series of deep canyons carved into sandstone rock.
Visual Characteristics
The gorge walls are composed of red and ochre sandstone, exhibiting distinct stratification. The depth of the gorge varies, with some sections reaching approximately 30 meters. Vegetation is sparse, primarily consisting of drought-resistant shrubs and acacia trees clinging to the rock faces. During the wet season, small ephemeral waterfalls may be present.
Location & Access Logistics
Moremi Gorge is situated approximately 70 kilometers west of Maun. Access is via the A3 highway towards Ghanzi, turning off onto a gravel road (often designated as a track) approximately 50 kilometers from Maun. The final 20 kilometers require a 4x4 vehicle due to sandy terrain and potential washouts. No public transport services operate directly to the gorge. Parking is informal and unpaved, located at the gorge's entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The gorge is a result of long-term erosion by ephemeral rivers and wind action on the ancient sandstone bedrock. Its formation is estimated to have occurred over thousands of years. Ecologically, it represents a semi-arid savanna environment adapted to limited water availability.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with trails following the gorge floor and rim. Exploration of the canyon's narrow sections is possible. Photography of the rock formations and geological features is recommended. Birdwatching is also an option, with species adapted to arid environments present.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No formal infrastructure is present at Moremi Gorge. There are no restrooms, designated shade structures, or food vendors. Cell phone signal is unreliable and generally absent within the gorge itself.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for visiting is during the cooler months, from May to September, to avoid extreme heat. Early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions for photography due to the angle of the sun on the sandstone walls. Access can be challenging after heavy rainfall, as the gravel track may become impassable.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the gorge was once a sanctuary for ancient spirits. A specific geological feature within the gorge, a naturally formed archway, is locally referred to as the "Whispering Arch" due to the wind's sound as it passes through.
